I recently bought Catan: Seafarers 4th Edition (previously known as Seafarers of Catan not 4th edition). I thought it would be a let down, because I thought all Seafarers adds to the game play is water tiles and boats. But it turns out that Seafarers comes with a lot of land tiles (including gold) and a bunch of scenarios you can play out (In one of them you have to defeat pirates!).

Puzzlehunts are Awesome!

The College Puzzle Challenge happened a couple weekends ago. I have participated in it for the past few times and it has been one of my favourite things all year. If you don’t know what a puzzle hunt is, it’s basically a big puzzle competition where you do a lot of puzzles. The answers to those puzzles then combine to help solve a meta-puzzle.

I wish there were more puzzle hunts around, but they are a lot of work to make, especially if you want it to be good. The puzzles are generally not your-run-of-the-mill types of puzzles. They combine every and any type of puzzle with ciphers, popular trivia and occasionally a riddle. Check out the college puzzle challenge for some great puzzles (2007’s meta-puzzle is really good). And google puzzle hunts for yourself.

Post Scriptum: I wish I worked for Microsoft, they have a company puzzle hunt each year.

Update: This deal is now done, but check the website for future deals.

Well almost $20. The deal is that adults pay kids price. So it’s $43.50 instead of $62.95. The deal lasts until Nov. 2, 2008, so you have 2 weeks left. I believe you have to order the tickets online. Check the website for details (the deal is at the bottom).

So if you have never gone or haven’t gone in awhile, I suggest you go. It’s a good show, you get lots of food and you get to eat with your hands.

Also if have gone, who was you final champion?

Nuit Blanche is a great excuse to stay up all night walking around looking at crazy and interesting art. I was more impressed by it two years ago, but it was still interesting and the price is right.

So I was Digging the other day and I came across an article in the NY Times about squirt gun assassins. It sounded pretty awesome: going around the city and trying to get your mark, while avoiding getting “killed” by your would-be assassin. The downside is that you have to carry a water-pistol and live in fear (or is that the fun part).

Blogging can be fun and educational. Or it can be young and full of angst. But whatever you blog for, it has become one of the most popular hobbies in Canada and the US. Some people even make money off of it through the magic of the internet. But who is actually blogging? As far as I can tell it is mainly Christian Canadians on WordPress. Surprised? So was I, but it makes sense.

Settlers of Catan: Best Game Ever

Settlers of Catan
3-4 Players (Expandable to 5-6 Players)
Game time: 30min-1hour

Settlers of Catan is the best board game. It is intelligent, involving and competitive. Players start with two settlements each and then get “resources” based on the dice rolled each turn. They use the resources to build more settlements and cities for points. Ten points and you win.

The best part of the game is that the board is different each time you play. That is the result of you having to make the board each time, which is the worst part of the game. There is a bit of a learning curve to it, especially with strategies like where to build and how you should trade and also there are many rules.
